The History Of Cape Town
In 1488 Bartolomeus Dias arrived at the Cape and called it The Cape of Storms (later renamed as The Cape of Good Hope). A decade later, Vasco de Gama arrived at the Cape and from this arrival, the Portuguese monopolized Eastern trade and the Europeans became familiar to the Khoi-Khoi. It could be derived that this planted the seed for the Capes cultural diversity. In 1652, Jan van Riebeek established a permanent settlement at the Cape, which served as a halfway station for ships to take in fresh water and food. It also facilitated trade to the East. The Cape developed a need for slaves, due to the crops that were planted to serve the need for food of the passing ships. The imported slaves also made a contribution to the Capes diverse cultural heritage.
